Email Subject Line Best Practice for eCommerce

Subject lines can be your first and last impression with a customer or potential customer - make it count!

First the basics…

  • Subject lines: 40-50 characters/6-9 words

  • Keep it simple and to the point - you’ve got seconds to make that impression

  • Use personalisation - your email is 22% more likely to be opened.

  • Don't forget your mobile snippets/preview text: 60-90 characters/ 8-10 words

Then get creative…

  • Personalise, personalise, personalise. Use the recipient's name. For emails like abandon check-out or back in-stocks, add the actual product in either space for more impact.

  • An emoji can get you noticed in a ‘noisy’ inbox. Use just 1 in your subject/snippet line and only if appropriate for the brand or audience being targeted

  • Compelling Offer? Tell them about it.

FOMO or Scarcity

Humans have a deep fear of missing out - email subject lines threatening scarcity (hurry, before it’s too late!) tend to perform well.

Use Humour

Laughter is the best medicine and a great way to get your email noticed in a dull inbox. But only use this if you know you’re audience well and fits your brand!

“C’mon, its Friday and you’re killing time anyway…’

“ Dont tell your mum!”

Test and learn! A/B test your subject lines - it's the easiest way to add testing into your email strategy.
