A TikTok Ads Best Practice Guide

If you’re not on TikTok already, should you be? 

Looking at the upward trajectory, millions of monthly users and advertising opportunities, the answer is yes. 

Here at Webtopia, our team have been training in TikTok advertising and now offer this alongside our Facebook, Instagram and Google ads. 

We recently created a TikTok ads best practice guide and I thought I would share the love with you! 

1: Don’t Make Ads. Make TikToks 

Forget everything you know about ad creative - on TikTok, ads should never look like ads.

Facebook ads cannot simply be repurposed for TikTok - users will sniff them out a mile away and simply skip past them.

This is no place for static images! Everything should be shot and edited via the app.


2: Authenticity is Key

Yep, the uglier and less slick-looking the ad, the better. Time to throw your brand guidelines out the window and experiment.


3: Learn the Language of the Platform

Get familiar with TikTok. Create an account, choose topics to follow and get scrolling!

You’ll soon learn that TikTok is all about trends - trending songs, filters, memes, and so on. The more of these that your ads can reference, the better.


4: Get Creative!

TikTok videos have their own visual language - transitions, text overlays, and so on. Ads must follow the same style to blend in so get creative with it!

Music, voice and sound effects are central to the TikTok experience and copy needs to be SHORT - two lines max.


Formats for Creative

✅ TikTok ads must be between 5 and 60 seconds long.

✅ The max file size is 500MB (except for Spark Ads, where no max file size applies).

✅ The main aspect ratio for ads is vertical at 9:16 (the recommended file size is 540 x 960 pixels).

✅ It’s recommended to stick to .mp4, .mov, .mpeg, .avi, or .gif file types.

✅ ​Make sure that you’re leaving margins in the top (at least 130 pixels), the bottom (up to 484 pixels), and the left (44 pixels) of the creatives to account for profile pictures, CTA buttons, and more that will appear over the ad.
